Winter Beach Fishing
Both Victoria and NSW have some excellent winter beach fishing to offer. Great numbers of large Australian Salmon, Silver Trevally and Tailor become prevalent up and down the east coast.
Targeting this fish using lures on light shore casting outfits can prove to be extremely entertaining and easily accessible to most fishers.
We would recommend using a spinning outfit. A rod length between 8ft-11ft with a rating between 3-6 kg and 4-8 kg. The extra length really helps with casting lures a greater distance off the sand. A compact 4000 to 6000 (current Daiwa and Shimano sizing) is a great match for these rods offering ample line capacity and drag output.
A 15lb to 20lb braided line also helps with casting distance whilst providing enough strength to turn some of those bigger fish.
Using lures such as, Gillies baitfish, Halco Twisties, Nomad Ridgebacks or any other metal slice style lures frequently result in great captures and are very easy to use.
Fishing with 3-5inch soft plastics on nice heavy jig heads are also extremely effective if the fish are more timid on the day. Natural colours such as white, silver and blue can often encourage a bite. Munroes soft plastics 3.75” paddle tails in colour “fools gold” match with a 5/8oz jig head is a favourite of ours at Lured Inn.
