RIGGING FOR GAMEFISH | HOW TO TIE YOUR DOUBLE

How to Tie a Plaited Double Knot

The plaited double knot is used in game fishing to create a strong doubled loop in your main line. This loop is commonly connected to a wind-on leader using a cat’s paw knot. It is especially effective with heavier lines (15 kg and above).

In this video, Casey explains how to tie a PLAITED DOUBLE GAME KNOT.

Materials Needed

  • Main fishing line (15–37 kg recommended)
  • Wind-on leader
  • Scissors or line cutters
  • Optional: lighter for sealing the tag end

Steps

Step 1 — Prepare the line

  • Pull off enough line from your reel to form a loop approximately 3 metres long.
  • Pinch the two strands together so that you are holding a doubled line.

Step 2 — Form three strands

  • Take the tag end (free end of the line).
  • Pass it around the back of the doubled section and pull it down.
  • You should now have three strands: the two sides of the loop and the tag end in the middle.

Step 3 — Begin the plait

  • Hold the three strands firmly at the top.
  • Take the left strand and cross it over into the middle.
  • Take the right strand and cross it over into the middle.
  • Continue alternating left and right, always pulling firmly to keep the plait tight.

Step 4 — Continue the plait

  • Repeat this sequence until the plait is approximately 10 cm (about 4 inches) long.
  • Make sure each crossover is snug. The tighter and neater the plait, the stronger the knot will be under heavy load.

Step 5 — Finish the plait

  • Stop when the tag end is back in the middle position.
  • Create a small loop with the tag end.
  • Continue plaiting by incorporating this loop: right over the middle, left over the middle, then right over again.
  • Repeat until the loop passes through the middle three times.

Step 6 — Lock the knot

  • Thread both strands of the loop through the small loop created with the tag end.
  • Pull the loop all the way through.
  • Pull the tag end firmly to tighten and secure the plait.

Step 7 — Final adjustments

Optionally, use a lighter to lightly melt the tag end as a precaution against slipping. Pull both sides of the loop against the main line to seat the knot securely. Trim the tag end neatly.
