In this video, Casey explains how to tie a back to back uni knot.
Introduction
Good day guys, Casey here from Lured In Fishing.
Today I’d like to show you how to tie a back-to-back uni knot—a simple and reliable knot for connecting:
- Leader line to braided line
- Two nylon lines
- Two fluorocarbon lines
It’s essentially just two uni knots tied together.
Step 1 – Prepare the Lines
- Hold your leader line in one hand and your braid in the other.
- Cross them so they overlap, and pinch them in the middle to hold them in place.
Step 2 – Tie the Uni Knot on the Braid Side
- Start with the braid side.
- Leave about 5–6 inches of tag end.
- Make a loop with the braid.
- Pass the tag end around both the loop and the leader line.
- Wrap six times.
- Pull the knot down tight.
Step 3 – Tie the Uni Knot on the Leader Side
- Switch to the leader side.
- Make a loop with the leader.
- Wrap the tag end around both the loop and the braid four or five times.
- Pull the knot down tight.
Step 4 – Pull Knots Together
- You’ll now have two knots separated by a short distance.
- Wet both knots and the section of line between them.
- Pull on the main line of the braid and the main line of the leader until the knots slide together.
Step 5 – Finish the Knot
- Trim both tag ends as close to the knot as possible.
- The neater and shorter your tags, the smoother the knot will pass through your rod guides when casting.
Final Result
You now have a clean, strong back-to-back uni knot—ideal for connecting lines of different materials and diameters while maintaining strength and smooth casting performance.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Tie an Overhand Knot
- Start with your leader line.
- Make a small loop.
- Pass the tag end through the loop and pull it down so it’s small but can still fit the line through later.
2. Attach the Lure
- Pass the tag end through the lure’s eye.
- Pull the line so the overhand knot sits about a thumbnail’s width from the lure.
3. Feed the Tag End Back Through
- Pass the tag end back through the overhand knot.
- Lightly snug it to check the distance from the lure.
4. Wrap the Blood Knot Coils
- Wrap the tag end around the main line 5 times.
- Instead of going through the lower loop (as in a normal blood knot), pass the tag end back through the overhand knot.
5. Tighten the Knot
- Pull the main line, the coils, and the lure to seat the knot evenly.
- Trim the tag end.
Result
You’ll have a clean loop knot that allows your lure to move naturally and helps prevent bibbed lures from veering to one side.
